In 1930, the legendary Joy was introduced as the costliest perfume in the world. French couturier Jean Patou had set out to create a fragrance "free from all vulgarity" at any cost, as well as "impudent, crazy and extravagant beyond reason". Indeed, The sumptuous scent quickly became revered as the world's most extravagant perfume and to this day remains the costliest perfume to produce, according to the Patou firm.
The dominant notes are absolute of jasmine and Bulgarian rose, two of the world's rarest and most expensive essences. Each ounce contains the essence from more than 10,000 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen roses. Lavish quantities of the delicate jasmine and elegant rose are woven into a rich tapestry of more than a 100 essences, resulting in a scent that remains true to Jean Patou's vision. Each vessel of fragrance is still mixed and hand-sealed as it was at its inception in a process carefully overseen by Jean Kerleo, Patou's internationally recognized in-house perfumer, along with Patou's great nephews, who head the company.
Jean Patou launched his quest for Joy in 1926 when he took his assistant, cafe society woman Elsa Maxwell, with him to Grasse to work with perfumers on the new scent. Together they searched for a fragrance that would meet the exacting requirements of the best-dressed and most discriminating women of the world, the social leaders and accomplished women of theia day. After exhaustive testing they were presented with the formula for Joy, a recipe that called for twice the amount of essential oils that other popular perfumes contained. But alas, the perfumer told them it was too expensive to be commercially viable. That cinched it. Hence was born the "costliest fragrance in the world", and women the world over had to have it.
Joy is timeless; as revered today as it was more than 60 years ago. It remains a strong, dynamic floral essence with an unmistakable stamp of wealth, breeding and confidence. For a special treat, indulge in Joy in Baccarat crystal, one perfect ounce of pure joy for about $585 - and worth every penny.
